Brief History

The Greek Orthodox Community School of Hobsons Bay in Altona was founded in 1967 and has undergone significant growth and transformation over the past 57 years.

Initially housed in the hall of the first community church on Mills Street, the school relocated to the Early Childhood Centre in 2001 before moving to its own dedicated space in 2010.

As enrolments increased, the need for more classrooms became apparent, leading the Greek Orthodox Community of Hobsons Bay to embark on an ambitious project to build a new, state-of-the-art facility designed exclusively for education symbolizing a new chapter for the school.

This milestone coincided with the introduction of the school’s first VCE class, marking another significant achievement. The school follows the VCAA curriculum, emphasizing the promotion of Greece’s rich cultural heritage.

A team of experienced educators from both Australia and Greece work diligently to inspire a passion for Greek language and culture in their students.

The school transforms every historical event and celebration into opportunities for students to engage deeply with Greek language, history, mythology, literature, dance, and cooking.

At the Greek Orthodox Community School of Hobsons Bay, students don’t just attend language classes—they are immersed in a vibrant cultural education that helps them form a strong Greek identity.

Typical Student/Family Profile

The school welcomes families of all types, embracing a diverse student body from various backgrounds.

Most students are local residents, attending nearby schools in the surrounding area.

They are primarily 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th generation Greeks of the diaspora, with many coming from mixed marriages where one parent is of Greek heritage.

The parents of these students come from a wide range of economic statuses, reflecting the varied socioeconomic makeup of the community.

This inclusive environment fosters a rich cultural experience for all who attend.

The school’s staff consists of dedicated professionals, volunteers, and board members, all of whom are holders of the Working with Children Check, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment for students.

VCE teachers are holders of VIT cards. Teachers are carefully selected, with a background in education and verified references, bringing a wealth of experience from teaching at various community schools.

Regular meetings are mandatory, and teachers are encouraged to actively contribute to discussions and decisions. Professional development is a priority, with staff required to attend educational workshops to stay current in their teaching methods.

The school maintains open communication, regularly sending updates and teaching-related matters via email from the principal.

Together, the principal, committee, and teachers are committed to providing high-quality education in a stimulating and supportive environment, helping students acquire the social and cultural knowledge needed to benefit both themselves and the wider community.
